I love this time of year when the weather is finally warming, and the trends are all about fresh skin and playful bursts of colour. The spring summer 2019 shows featured a lot of bronzed, golden looks, and plenty of celebratory sparkle and shimmer. From bleached brows to 70s sex appeal, and a sprinkling of glitter in between, check out the biggest beauty trends of SS19 to nail for this season.

Gym Skin

Noon by Noor’s models wore barely-there makeup with super-glossy skin, one of the biggest trends to emerge for SS19. This fresh-out-the-gym skin finish is really easy to create at home, just blend your favourite highlighting fluid with your foundation or BB Cream. Other shows opting for this trend included Tory Burch, where models walked wearing invisible makeup to celebrate models’ freckles and natural skin tones.

Shimmer & Sparkle

Glitter has slowly been making the transition from a party trick to a makeup essential over the last few seasons, and the trend continues for SS19. Pat McGrath leads the charge for next season, with the ultimate sparkle statement at Valentino, where glittering eyes were created using hand applied Swarovski crystals and glitter lips were created on other models. The Versace show saw models wearing shimmering metallic oversized cat eye flicks while Missoni’s models displayed a more wearable glitter highlight on the inner eye. At Kate Spade, the models paid tribute to the late designer’s sparkle with a scattering of gold glitter across their eyelids.

Sex Appeal

While I always love the skin-first, natural makeup looks that I’m known for, there’s something fun about creating something really glamorous and sexy, especially during fashion week. There was plenty of sex appeal on the SS19 catwalks, with makeup to match. I created a modern-sexy look for the girls backstage at Julien Macdonald using Max Factor makeup, with an alluring, pulled-out smoky eye look and a subtly sculpted skin. Other takes on this were the subtle gunmetal smoky eye at Nicole Miller and the gold-tipped hazy smoky eye with a 70s feel at Tom Ford.

Bleached Brows

Brow bleaching is a technique I’ve used lots over the years, and it’s interesting to see it come back into fashion on the catwalk. It’s a great way to emphasise the eyes for a more dramatic look, particularly on fair skin, as is shown on the runway at Prada SS19. There, models wore their hair in short, choppy bangs, with full 60s lashes shown off to great effect with bleached brows. Makeup was led here by Pat McGrath. The polar opposite could be found at Temperley London, where Charlotte Tilbury worked with models’ brows to darken and volumise, adding texture by combing upward.

Colour

As always for spring/summer, there were plenty of playful, colourful looks on show. The eyes and brows are where it’s at for SS19’s boldest beauty looks, from popping pink eyebrows and graphic colour eyeliner at Guy Laroche to heavy blue or orange kohl-rimmed eyes at Marques’Almeida. At Anna Sui, Pat McGrath took the trend to the next level with a pink and orange bold and bright makeup look that extended upward from the eyes to the forehead and downward onto the cheeks.

Bronzed Goddess

Super-glossy summer skin was the order of the day at Badgley Mischka, with fresh pink colour on the eyes, cheeks and lips for a naturally-flushed summer look. Models at Max Mara wore super-bronzed cheeks and copper smoky eyes with plenty of highlighter to give a golden glow. At Prabal Gurung Diane Kendal used highlighter to create a summer skin finish, alongside MAC’s Coffee Eyeliner to create smudgy brown eyes.
