The Best No-Makeup Makeup

The fact is, sometimes it’s nice to look and feel at your most gorgeous while looking like you haven’t tried at all. Barely-there makeup looks are amongst my absolute favourites, with my nickname ‘the master of nudes’ coming from my skin-first approach to makeup. It’s all about enhancing your individual natural beauty, and here’s how.

No-makeup makeup is a look that never goes out of style; I’ve been creating signature nude makeup looks for years. But creating something that appears to be a no-makeup natural look is harder than you might think! The end result is all about the prep, and as always, taking a skin-first approach is essential. Here, I’ll give you some top tips for creating a no-makeup look as well as advise on some essential products for the perfect nude.

Sometimes referred to as ‘invisible makeup’, ‘nude makeup’ or ‘no-makeup makeup’, the art of the nude is something that once you’ve mastered, you’ll always look your best, whatever the occasion. You know those people who always look gorgeous and glowing, whatever they’re doing? They have mastered the art! So how can you do it?

Sarah Chapman Skinesis Ultimate Cleanse

First comes skin prep, so massage a cream cleanser skin to remove all traces of dirt or makeup and any dead skin (because foundation will stick to any dry patches). I love this Sarah Chapman cleanser for a deep clean and the start and end of the day.

Victoria Beckham Beauty Cell Rejevenating Power Serum

For super gorgeous, radiant skin, apply this Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader Power Serum. The luminous results, particularly on thin skin, are really quite amazing and it’s a moisturiser and treatment in one. For more ways to get glowing skin check out my roundup of the best highlighters.

Chanel Les Beiges Water Fresh Tint

Comprised of 75% water, this super-light pigment melts into the skin on application to create a truly barely-there veil. If you want a super-natural no-makeup look with your usual foundation, try mixing it with a little moisturiser for a lighter finish.

Laura Mercier Secret Concealer

You can touch up any blemishes or lift blue tones under the eyes with a little concealer, but again, don’t go too heavy with the product so that your ‘real’ skin is still visible, this is about touch-up, not masking!

Kevyn Aucoin The Eye Lash Curler

True no-makeup looks leave the lips and eyes bare, but ensure lips are soft and plump with a light exfoliation and an application of lip balm, and curl lashes with a quality lash curler just to open up the eyes.

And there you have it! No-makeup, natural beauty (with just a *little* makeup). If you have shine-prone skin you can also apply a little translucent powder across the T-zone and you might want to add a little sculpt to the cheeks, too.
