This week we spoke to founder BBS Simone De La Rue about exercise being fun, her favourite workout gear and what to eat to get the most out of your workout.

At Wendy Rowe we believe in exercising all year round because it feels so good! But we know that’s not for everyone – with Winter behind us and Summer approaching, there’s never been a better time to choose some healthier choices. Exercise is so important for your body and mind, and also for your skin. Body by Simone is my go-to workout whenever I’m in New York.

“I really just want you to have a good time and see exercise as a joy and not a chore.”

Q&A with Simone De La Rue

I love your classes and try to do one every day when I’m in New York, I’ve been doing them for years now. What advice do you give to people just starting out at BBS?

The first thing I say is that all I want them to do is just stay in the room for the first class, be present and try to push through. The classes are very challenging but also really fun. I really just want you to have a good time and see exercise as a joy and not a chore.

“There is no point coming into class and working out and then going home and eating a pizza. Everything has to be in moderation.”

I really believe that’s key to exercise! Making sure it’s fun. That’s how you end up going back for more and really seeing results. How long would you say it takes to change your body through exercise?

You will definitely see change after 4 weeks if you come 4-5 times per week. After 8 weeks you will see a huge change and your energy levels and physical strength will have increased dramatically.

I always think it’s not just enough to workout, you need to balance workout with diet to really feel good. What kind of meal plan/ diet would you recommend to someone looking to get the most out of their work out?

You should eat a protein and a carbohydrate an hour before your workout, and a protein an hour after you workout – this is to give you energy and also feed the muscles. I recommend eating a heavy protein diet and limiting sugar, alcohol, dairy and gluten.

“Make healthy eating and working out a lifestyle choice. Be kind to yourself and set realistic goals to be the best version of yourself.”

Can you recommend an easy (cheat) food to eat on the go that’s still good for you?

I am a big fan of rice cakes and hummus and nuts. They are great healthy snacks and easy to carry in your bag. Failing that a chocolate protein shake is filling and tasty and gives you the protein you need to your workout.

I love workout clothes, and you always look great when you’re working out. What are you three favourite work out items?

I swear by Newton running shoes, they are perfect for dance cardio because they’re super light and colourful. I’m an ambassador for Under Armour and I love all of their workout clothes, especially their outerwear.

What are your non-negotiables when it comes to diet and exercise?

There is no point coming into class and working out and then going home and eating a pizza. Everything has to be in moderation. If you want to see change you have to put in the hard work. Only coming once a week will not help you change your body.

I think that’s really great advice, everything in moderation, it’s not always so easy to stick to. Do you have a personal mantra that helps keep you on track?

Make healthy eating and working out a lifestyle choice. Be kind to yourself and set realistic goals to be the best version of yourself.
