The summer is a great time to get experimental with your hair. The hot weather calls for casual swept-back styles and beach waves, wedding season means polished up-dos and festival season calls for braids and plaits of all shapes and sizes. If you want some inspiration to change up your look, check out my guide to this season’s hair trends, and give them a try yourself. (Failing that, take the picture to your favourite hair stylist!)

5 Hair Trends to Try This Summer
Wet Look Locks
Wet-look locks was a trend on display at the Altuzarra, Markus Lupfer and Chloe SS19 shows. This is a great one for the beach (you can either pre-prep locks with salt spray or simply use a little sea water to push through hair) or festival season, as it’s both edgy and feminine.
Long Braids
Summer braids are often worn loose and dishevelled to create a romantic look, but SS19’s plaits were worn low and long at Max Mara, Erdem and Cushnie. Opt for a sleek, wet look and add an on-trend accessory for a catwalk-worthy braid.
Headbands
Hair accessories have made a comeback for SS19, with Alice bands popping up all over the high street in homage to the statement styles seen on the runway. Take a leaf out of Miu Miu’s book and opt for a sparkling style to banish bad hair days.
Polished Shine
Gorgeous glossy locks are on-trend for summer 2019, with Christopher Kane, Moschino and Missoni all opting for long straight locks worn half-up, in tight buns, or ponytails. But if you have a wedding to attend this season, check out Emilia Wickstead’s slicked-back ponytail worn with two statement bows.
Beach Waves
The most low-maintenance trend for summer is to let your hair do its thing and work with natural kinks and waves. Etro and Chanel SS19 shows showed beach-ready waves that won’t take long to recreate at home.

Stay ahead of the fashion pack…
If you want to look further ahead, tap into one of AW19’s hottest hair trends now. Guido Palau created this show-stopping look at the Burberry AW19 show and it’s been cropping up everywhere since. The look is a (more elaborate) nod to black and Hispanic London youth culture and one of the most beautiful artistic hair looks from the season.
