Artist Shout-Out: Pat McGrath

This week’s artist shout-out needs no introduction (but I’ll give her one anyway!). Pat McGrath is the mastermind behind the looks at roughly 80 fashion shows a year, and her Pat McGrath Labs colour collection has been a huge success since it launched last year. Her SS19 key looks included Valentino, Prada and Anna Sui.

Makeup Artistry goes beyond making people look pretty. It is about pushing boundaries and creating art. My favourite artists to watch are always those who are truly thinking outside the box, and creating something different through their work. There is no doubt that Pat McGrath OBE falls into that category. Photographer Steven Meisel’s go-to, Pat has worked with a host of top designers and models like Naomi Campbell and Gigi Hadid; Pat’s looks are always the ones to keep an eye out for backstage at fashion week. In the 90s she was known for rebelling against the matte skin trend and making it OK to have shine on the skin, and her use of glitter, colour and graphic lines are legendary, she never fails to disappoint! This season she was pushing boundaries once again, creating SS19 looks at Victoria Beckham, Prada, Valentino and Anna Sui shows.

What we learnt from Pat McGrath’s SS19 looks…

Invisi-brows are back

Bleached brows are often used in fashion to make a statement look, and Pat used them to great effect at Prada with extreme voluminous 60s lashes (with added projected lashes on the lids), matte skin and pale lips.

Metallics do work for spring

At Versace, Pat created elongated metallic cat eyes using her signature colour collection, translating this classic party season look for spring/summer. Just opt for a fresh hue like Pat’s spring green to keep the look relevant.

Sometimes, more is more

With Pat McGrath, you always know that at some point, it’s going to involve glitter! And she didn’t disappoint at Valentino, even upgrading from glitter to crystals, with the sparkliest eyes of the season being created using hand-applied Swarovski crystals while other girls wore sparkling lips in hot pink and red hues.

Colour clashes are cool for SS19

Nothing says spring like floral pinks and warm orange tones. Mix them together and you’ve got the epic statement makeup colour clash that Pat created for the Anna Sui SS19 show. Classic Pat, I love this look!
