Artist Shout-Out: Diane Kendal

For the next instalment in my series of artist shout-outs, I’m highlighting the brilliant work of Diane Kendal, one of the most talented MUAs in the business. As always, I had my eyes tuned to her work backstage during fashion week, and she created some of the most exciting looks for SS19…

Diane Kendal has been at the top of her game in the fashion industry for 30 years. Her work regularly appears on the covers of Italian, French and American Vogue, and she’s collaborated with photographers including David Sims, Marcus Piggot and Patrick Demarchelier. She’s the makeup artist for Marc Jacobs Beauty, and has a close working relationship with hair stylist Guido, plus, as a fellow Brit living in New York, I always love catching up when we cross paths! Her makeup at the SS19 shows included Tom Ford, Sonia Rykiel and Marc Jacobs to name but a few.

What we learnt from Diane Kendal’s SS19 looks…

The rosy cheek is back

Perfect for spring, I loved Diane’s look at Sonia Rykiel, which was super fresh skin with a rosy cheek and glossy lip. Brows were well-groomed for a more polished look, while eyes were left completely natural. Diane’s hero product was L’Oreal’s Heavenly Infallible Lipstick in Strike A Rose.

The 60s eye goes colourful

Diane Kendal’s Marc Jacobs look was pretty major for SS19. Think retro beehives, feline flicks and flawless skin. The look was given a modern twist, Diane style, with pastel eye colour from lid to brow, and nude glossy lips for a fresh take on the trend.

Eyes OR lips

Choosing eyes or lips for your statement look is the oldest rule in the book, but Diane proved why with two gorgeous looks at Gabriela Hearst SS19. One was a strong cobalt blue graphic eye, the other a matte red lip, both using Mac Cosmetics.

The ultimate copper smoke

You know what you’re getting at the Tom Ford show, and that’s all-out glamour. Diane created a stunning bronze smoky eye with a hint of gold at the inner eye to add a touch of sparkle. Skin and lips were worn matte to draw focus to the eyes.
