The scarf is a modern classic, which has dominated social media feeds all summer. They come in all shapes and sizes, from classic bandana motifs to romantic florals, bold Bauhaus prints to retro paisleys. Tie it in your hair, wrap it around your hips, keep one tied to your bag, wear it as a halter bandeau on vacation or to dinner with wide leg pants and a tuxedo jacket, as a belt threaded through your jeans or around your coat. Drape it over a baseball cap and tie it under your chin for that off-duty model look–don’t forget the cats-eye sunnies, and if it’s generously sized use it as a makeshift pareo worn with a fine knit sweater come late summer for that post-holiday vibe.

A statement scarf is a favourite of Old Hollywood icons and rock royalty that’s now mimicked by today’s style set. For some references I love: Renée Perle’s painterly perfection, Slim Keith’s uptown cool, Grace Kelly (who famously wore a Hermès scarf as an arm sling), Jackie Kennedy’s signature look and David Bowie, who wore his as a cravat, clearly influenced by Cary Grant. And let’s not forget Anita Pallenberg, who made it boho before we even knew the term.

Pro TIP: Some scarves are just too good to keep hidden in a drawer. Frame them, and let them live a second life as wall candy, after all, they are works of art!
So, in honour of my textile obsession and in service of your wardrobe, here are six scarf brands, high and low-ish priced that I’m loving right now.
