Bakuchiol: The Natural Retinol Alternative

For some time now people have been obsessed with the anti-ageing, and skin improving properties of retinol. But it can have something of a bad rep, particularly if you suffer from sensitive skin, as it can cause irritation and even breakouts for certain skin types. Enter bakuchiol, the natural alternative.

I’ve already told you about the skin benefits of retinol, a skincare ingredient derived from vitamin A boasting anti-ageing properties thanks to its ability to increase cell turnover. It can also be hugely useful in tackling hyperpigmentation and acne, although it can have adverse reactions for sensitive skin, ranging from dryness and flaking to breakouts. But if your skin is too sensitive for retinol, don’t despair. The plant-derived compound bakuchiol is a natural alternative to retinol that works on the skin in a very similar way, so it might be worth a try if you’re seeking the same results but with a gentler touch.

What is Bakuchiol?

The hero ingredient is derived from seeds and leaves of the babchi plant (psoralea corylifolia plant) from Eastern Asia and has been a favourite in Ayurvedic treatments (those focusing on the mind-body connection) for centuries. It has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The botanical extract has been clinically proven to stimulate collagen production, minimise the appearance of fine lines and improve skin condition. It’s also safe to use in pregnancy, unlike many retinoids. So, it’s no wonder it’s the ingredient everyone’s talking about! Ready to give it a try? Here are some bakuchiol beauty products worth checking out…
